Das größte Electronic und Independent Music Festival in NRW am Samstag, den 1. August im Westfalenpark Dortmund

Das Juicy Beats Festival im Dortmunder Westfalenpark geht in diesem Jahr in die 14. Runde. Das größte Electronic und Independent Music Festival in NRW startet am Samstag, den 1. August. Von 12 Uhr Mittags bis 4 Uhr Nachts verwandeln über 100 Bands und DJs den gesamten Park in eine aussergewöhnliche Konzert- und Partylocation. Sechs Live-Bühnen und 14 DJ-Floors bieten ein buntes Musik-Programm von Electronic-Beats und Drum’n’Bass über World Beat und Reggae bis hin zu Indierock und Soul. Im Nachtprogramm präsentieren sich erneut die angesagtesten Clubs des Ruhrgebiets mit internationalen Star-DJs. Zudem sind das FZW, das Konzerthaus, das domicil, die Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen und das Videofestival Bochum mit eigenen Bühnen vertreten.

Mehr als 300 Künstler an 17 Orten im Westfalenpark

Insgesamt sind mehr als 300 Künstler an den 17 Locations im Westfalenpark zu sehen. Top-Act ist die Electro Super Dance Band Deichkind. Ihre Liebe zu blindem Aktionismus und übertriebenem Pilsgenuss bewiesen die schrillen Bühnentiere bereits vor zwei Jahren mit ihrer spektakulären „Bierdusche“. Mit dem aktuellen Chartstürmer „Arbeit Nervt“ im Gepäck versprechen sie auch diesmal ein aussergewöhnliches Live-Erlebnis. Zuvor jedoch werden Alter Ego die Festwiese zum Beben bringen. Mit ihrer Electro Hymne „Rocker“ solidarisierten sie die Indie- und Technohörer auf den Tanzflächen der internationalen Clubszene. Sanftere Klänge wiederum erwarten die Festivalbesucher bei Jazzanova. Für ihre moderne Interpretation von Jazz, Latin, Boogie & Soul holen sie sich Verstärkung vom Detroiter Bassisten und Sänger Paul Randolph. Er arbeitete bereits mit Musikgrößen wie Carl Craig oder The Supremes zusammen. Nicht nur Reggae Fans dürfte der Auftritt der Dancehall-Queen Ce’Cile verzücken. Tough, rebellisch und trotzdem zuckersüss veredelte das jamaikanische „Bad Gyal“ mit ihrer sexy Stimme bereits Hits von Jean Paul, Shaggy und Beenie Man.

Ein besonderer Höhepunkt des Festivals ist der Auftritt des US-amerikanischen Girlduos Coco Rosie, das mit seinen elfenhaften Folksongs das Publikum an der FZW Bühne verzaubert. Mit hochkarätigen Live-Bands wie der Hamburger Kultkapelle „Die Goldenen Zitronen“ oder den Berliner Trashpunkern „Bonaparte“ gibt das FZW diesmal einen Vorgeschmack auf die nahende Eröffnung der neuen Räumlichkeiten neben dem U-Turm.

Ebenfalls hochkarätig ist das Programm an der Weltmusik-Bühne. Hier führt DJ Click mit seiner Flavour Liveshow auf eine elektronische Abenteuerreise in die Welt der orientalischen Klänge! Eine aufregende Mischung aus Jamaican Dancehall, African Beats und Popmusic verspricht das französische Produzentenduo Bost & Bim, das bereits mit Remixen für Timbaland, Justin Timberlake und Cassie für Aufsehen sorgte. Auch auf dem Reggae-Floor gibt es in diesem Jahr besondere Leckerbissen. Mit David Rodigan und Bitty MC Lean konnten gleich zwei internationale Top-Acts der Szene für ein Gastspiel gewonnen werden.

Kooperationen weiter ausgebaut

Neben der Zusammenarbeit mit dem FZW haben die Juicy Beats Macher auch die Kooperationen mit anderen Kulturveranstaltern und Events der Region weiter ausgebaut. So präsentiert sich das Konzerthaus Dortmund erstmalig mit einer eigenen Bühne. Hauptact ist hier das französisch/amerikanische Quintett Moriarty mit seinem elegischen Folk-Rock. Ganz neu ist auch die DEW21Kultur-Bühne, die mit den Highlights des Comedy Waschsalons Nightwash schon zur Mittagszeit unter das Sonnensegel lockt. Zum zweiten Mal mit eigener Bühne präsentieren sich das Domicil und das LesArt-Festival mit einer Mischung aus Jazz und Poetry. Filmfans wiederum kommen bei den nächtlichen Vorführungen des MuVi-Awards der Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen und des Videofestivals Bochum auf ihre Kosten: auf großen Leinwänden zeigen sie ein Best-Of ihrer diesjährigen Programme.

Die angesagtesten Clubs der Region an einem Ort

Im Nachtprogramm zieht erneut die Club- und DJ-Szene des Ruhrgebiets in die verschiedenen grösstenteils überdachten Locations im Park ein. Die angesagtesten Clubs und Veranstalter der Region präsentieren sich mit ihren Residents und internationalen Star-DJs. So finden Fans von Hotel Shanghai, VRSTCK, Le Grand, Beatplantation, Silent Sinners oder Cosmotopia schnell ihren Lieblingsfloor. Freunde elektronischer Tanzmusik können sich freuen auf die Sets des französischen New-Rave-Rebellen Vicarious Bliss (Ed Banger) und des New Yorker Partymonsters Larry Tee. Noch mehr Electronic Beats versprechen Âme vom Sonar Kollektiv und die Technoproduzenten Mathias Schaffhäuser und Jens Zimmermann. Ein seltenes Highlight verbirgt sich hinter dem Fra Diavolo DJ-Team: Totze und Teute, Sänger und Bassist der Indierock Superband Beatsteaks, toben sich unter diesem Pseudonym als DJs aus. Mit Klaus Fiehe, Helmich & Sänger, DJ Larse, Tobias Becker, Nils König, den Phoneheads und vielen anderen konnten zudem wieder die wichtigsten DJs der regionalen Szene verpflichtet werden.

Veranstaltet wird das Festival vom Verein für urbane Popkultur e.V (UPOP) und der Popmodern Veranstaltungs GmbH in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Jugendamt der Stadt Dortmund. Präsentiert wird das Festival erneut von Beck´s. Weitere Unterstützer sind die Sparda Bank West, das Hotel Hilton, die Autovermietung Mork und das Kulturbüro der Stadt Dortmund. Die DSW21 - Dortmunder Stadtwerke richten zudem speziell für das Juicy Beats Festival U-Bahn-Linien ein. Die U-Bahn-Fahrt sowie die Zugfahrt aus dem gesamten VRR-Gebiet sind im Festivalticket enthalten.

Karten sind bereits erhältlich für 19 Euro zuzüglich Gebühr bei den bekannten Vorverkaufsstellen sowie im Ticketshop auf der Juicy Beats Webseite. Der Eintritt an der Tageskasse beträgt 24 Euro und wer erst nach 22 Uhr zum Partyprogramm kommen möchte, der zahlt 12 Euro an der Nachtpartykasse.

Überlegen sie gut, denn ihre Joker sind aufgebraucht und Marcel Reich-Ranicki weiß die Antwort auch nicht. Sie entscheiden sich für die brettharte Latte? Das haben wir uns schon fast gedacht. Gut, falsch! Mensch, kombinieren sie doch: Moon Harbour – Mond – Spanisch für Mond – Luna City Express!

Norman Webber und Marco Resmann aka Phage, der bereits schon mal zwei Mal mit seinem Label Upon On You in der Romy zu Gast war, reißen für das Label von Matthias Tanzmann seit über vier Jahren zuverlässig zum Mond. Bevor sie auf Moon Harbour ihre erste EP „Fresh“ veröffentlichten, waren sie schon lange Jahre zuvor in Berlin als DJ-Duo und Eventveranstalter aktiv. Bis heute haben sich seit dieser Zeit vor allem eins bewahrt: Egal ob in ihren Sets oder Produktion alle Facetten von House-Musik zu präsentieren.

Seit ihrer ersten EP für Moon Harbour sind sie dank weiteren dicken Releases ein integraler Bestandteil der Leipziger Institution geworden. Davon zeugt auch die Tatsache, dass Webber und Resmann die zweite Moon Harbour Inhouse Compi im Jahre 2007 mixen dürften. Quasi der Ritterschlag von Tanzmann.

Für die dritte Ausgabe, die vor kurzem erschienen ist und von Martinez gemixt wurde, rühren nun Luna City Express auf der Tour dazu kräftig die Werbetrommel. Logisch, denn natürlich sind sie selbst auf dem Sampler mit dem exklusiven Track „Swing City“ dabei, wie auch Dan Drastic mit „Two in one“ vertreten ist.

Luna Citys Labelmate ist ein waschechter Chemnitzer Jung, aber irgendwann nach Leipzsch übergesiedelt und schon lange Jahre einfach nur die gute Seele im Hause Moon Harbour. Von dem Image hat sich Dan Drastic längst befreit und spätestens seit seinem Bouncer „Slice Of Life“ aus dem letzten Jahr in DJ-Cases und Laptops festgenagelt.

Als DJ profiliert sich Dan Drastic bereits seit den 90er Jahren. Zunächst in seiner Heimatstadt und später in der ganzen Republik. Er versteht ebenso wie die Lunas sein Handwerk, soviel ist sicher. Wer also auf Fronleichnam mit einem geschmackvollen House-Set reinfeiern will, ist wie so oft in der Romy genau richtig.

Paco Osuna Pérez. Das rollt. Tonal eins A. Allein dieser Name verpflichtet gerade zu großen Taten. Paco ist aber kein spanischer Telenovela-Star, kein Fußballer bei Real oder Barca, Stierkämpfer und schon gar nicht der Masseur von den Pussycat Dolls geworden. Nein. He has come a long way baby. Paco is a Techno-DJ.

Die weite Techno-Welt kennt ihn erst seit geraumer Zeit. Genauer gesagt, seit seinen Releases und Remixen für Richie Hawtins Labelfamilie Plus 8 und Minus. Das ist eigentlich eine Schande, denn in seinem Heimatland Spanien ist Paco Osuna so etwas wie ein Pionier. Ein Techno-Pionier.

Rückblende: Die Spanier waren gerade in den 90er lange Jahre ziemlich Mainstream-House-affin. Doch eines Tages kam ein Mann namens Sven auf die liebste Bummbummbumm-Insel aller Spanier (und Briten, Deutschen usw.) und besetzte das Amnesia. Anfangs dachten sich viele Spanier, was will denn der jetzt mit seiner schrägen Maschinenmusik bei uns?

Paco Osuna dachte das nicht, sondern war gleich Feuer und Flamme für die Festlandbeats aus dem kalten Deutschland. Glücklicherweise wurde er im Jahr der deutschen Amnesia-Besatzung, 1999, Resident im selbigen und traf dort folglich auf den Sven aus Deutschland, was ihn nachhaltig beeinflussen sollte.

So kann sich Paco Osuna heute als einer der ersten spanischen DJs schimpfen, der auf Ibiza Techno aufgelegt hat. Außerdem stifte er den ersten Teil der Techno-Mix-Serie Amnesia: Ibiza Underground bei. Und außerdem (zum zweiten) war er der erste spanische DJ, der von Sven Väth in dessen Cocoon Agency aufgenommen wurde.

Rückblende aus: Heutzutage ist Paco Osuna als Bestandteil von Richies Family und macht die Welt mit Killertracks wie „Orbeat“ oder bevorzugt an drei Decks von Bergamo über Kiev und Chicago bis nach Toronto bevorzug unsicher. Bloß bislang halt mal wieder nicht in Stuttgart. Aber dafür ist ja Frau S. da.

Diese Nacht wird really schmal. Schmal in dem Sinn, dass wir erneut die Meister der Reduktion die heiligen Romy-Hallen betreten. Denn wir sind Minus. Wann immer Hawtin´s Boten die Minus-Lehren im Romy verbreiteten, kommt die Romy besonders oft und heftig. JPLS ist der neueste Star des Labels und wohl einer der minimalsten Acts überhaupt auf Minus.

Jeremy Jacobs ist der Kopf hinter dem Projekt. In seinen Tracks baut der Amerikaner einen minimalistischen und zugleich dunklen Klangkosmos auf. Das reduzierte und dennoch sehr detailreiche Klangdesign von JPLS stößt bei Richie Hawtin auf offene Ohren. Er nimmt Jacobs für sein Label Minus unter Vertrag.

Im Oktober 2006 erscheint dort mit "Program" die erste Maxi des in Indiana beheimateten Produzenten. Seine experimentellen Klangstudien werden von der Minimal-Gemeinde mit offenem Mund aufgenommen. Rund ein halbes Jahr später weitet JPLS sein Kompositionskonzept mit "Twilite" auf Albumlänge aus, das ebenfalls auf Minus erscheint.

Viele der JPLS-Tracks erinnern denn auch an frühe Platten Hawtins. Der ausgeprägte Minimalismus von Jacobs knüpft an Veröffentlichungen von Plastikman an. Ausgefeilte Klangarbeit steht im Vordergrund, funkiger Drive für den Club ist ein zweitrangiges Produkt der Studiosessions.

Dieser Aspekt seiner Arbeit hat sich zwischenzeitlich etwas verschoben, was er nicht nur bei seinen energiegeladenen Live-Acts beweist, sondern auch auf neuerem Output wie der bouncigen „Fuckshuffle EP.

Matter resident Yousef unveils his Collections of Scars and Situations
    

Newest matter resident Yousef celebrates the release of his debut artist album ‘A Collection of Scars and Situations’ at his new home alongside Moby and Trentemoller on Saturday 13th June, when he joins the bill for Stella Polaris’ Night Music event at the venue.

The founder of the Circus clubnight and record label, Liverpool’s Yousef has been welcomed into the matter team, taking up his place alongside fellow resident Paul Woolford as part of the in-house duo who will play at the venue on a regular monthly basis, and be involved in several creative aspects of the venue, including an input into the booking of artists. Having made his name with a residency at Cream in his home town, the past ten years have seen him appear on bills at some of the biggest events around the world, as well as establish Circus as one of Liverpool’s best loved clubs. The matter residency will be his first in London, and he intends it to be the beginning of a very exciting chapter in his decade-long career:

“I‘m excited to be invited to be a resident DJ at Matter. Having played there regularly since day one I’ve found there is no venue like it - technically its second to none, sound wise it’s in a league of its own, and the team behind the club are as forward thinking as I’ve come across. This is my first residency in London, and I can’t imagine a better place to test out new music I produce.”

The new residency co-incides with Yousef making his mark as an album artist in his own right, with his 12-track debut LP being released on his own Circus imprint on June 15th. Titled ‘A Collection of Scars and Situations’ it’s an appropriate bottling of Yousefs effervescent personality – a dozen tracks that vary from snaking funk to clinical Detroit-influenced techno and hedonistic Chicago house – with Chicago legend Derrick Carter making a guest vocal appearance on the track ‘Legacy’.

Yousef’s June date will be followed in July by another appearance alongside the Black Rabbit team, when they take over Room 2 for Nic Fanciulli’s Saved night, which will feature Tiga and Josh Wink as main room headliners.

As a matter resident DJ, Yousef joins prolific Leeds producer Paul Woolford, who has been keeping himself busy recently in between his appearances in North Greenwich:

· Remixes for the Juan Maclean and DJ Hell feat. Diddy are on the way

· A new Hell, Garnier and Digweed-supported single ‘Pandemonium / Prune Juice’ is out now on his Intimacy label - with another, ‘Timebomb / Pleasure’, to follow this month

· And he’s currently in the studio working with the Mercury-nominated Maps.

In amongst all this he’s also found time to design a watch for Casio as their new ambassador, and also has the small matter of his weekly residency at Space Ibiza kicking off on 14th June. Woolford is next at matter on June 27th, joining Tim Sheridan and Jesper Dahlback for VeryVeryWrongIndeed.

Es ist Talentschmiede und Kontaktbörse, Fachmesse und Kommunikationsplattform zugleich: Das legendäre „DJMeeting“, alljährlich aufgelegt von Organisatoren Caba Kroll und Klaus Fröhlich, begeht in diesem Jahr seinen 20. Geburtstag.

 

Am 12. Mai werden deshalb erneut DJs aus der ganzen Republik, Fachbesucher, Labels und Hersteller anreisen, um sich zu informieren, neueste DJ-Technik und -Equipment zu präsentieren, sich auszutauschen und zu feiern. Veranstaltungsort des Events wird dabei erneut Dortmund sein: Wegen der kompakten, übersichtlichen Messeflächen, der Top-Gastronomie und der hervorragenden Erreichbarkeit aus allen Teilen Deutschlands haben sich die Veranstalter nun zum dritten Mal für die „Prisma Nachterlebniswelt“ als Location entschieden.

 

Schon jetzt sind mehr als zwei Drittel der Messefläche gebucht oder reserviert, die wichtigsten Premium-Aussteller aus den Bereichen DJ-Technik und -Equipment haben sich angekündigt. Zusätzlich stehen erneut Workshops, Info-Talk und jede Menge Party mit Top-DJs auf dem Programm.

 

Zum runden Geburtstag kann das „DJMeeting“ auf eine rundum erfolgreiche Geschichte zurückblicken: Seit der ersten Veranstaltung in Bochum im Herbst 1990 hat es sich als wichtigstes nationales Event für DJs etabliert. Auf keiner anderen deutschen Fachmesse werden deren Anliegen, Probleme und Fragen so umfassend und kompetent geklärt.

Darüber hinaus wurden in den vergangenen zwanzig Jahren „DJMeeting“ ungezählte Geschäftskontakte geknüpft und Ideen zu zahlreichen Top-Hits geschmiedet. Viele damals noch unbekannte Künstler nutzten das Meeting als Basis, um ihre Karriere entscheidend voranzutreiben und zählen heute zur DJ-Elite des Landes. Auch die Entwicklung der DJ-Technik, vom ersten DJ-CD-Player bis zur heutigen, topaktuellen Software, spiegelt sich in der zwanzigjährigen Geschichte des „DJMeetings“ wieder. Jede Menge gute Gründe also um zu feiern – am 12. Mai 2009 in Dortmund.

An dem heutigen Abend schwelgen wir in Erinnerungen. Das neue Jahrtausend war noch äußerst jungfräulich, da wurde dem kommerziellen Großraum-House-Sound von Hymnen wie „Missy Queen is gonna die“ oder „Day Of Mine“ von Tok Tok vs. Soffy O ordentlich der Marsch geblasen. Und wir tanzten auf diesen neuen Electro-Sound aus der Hauptstadt stundenlang, u.a. im ersten Benztown Artists Projekt Wohlfahrt.

In dieser Nacht ist endlich das Revival der guten alten Zeit angesagt! Tok Tok sind back in Town und haben sogar noch Soffy O im Schlepptau. Das war in den letzten Jahren nicht immer so. Nach den zwei besagten Superhits, die via Major-Power unters Volk gejubelt worden, dem ersten Album (2002) und den unzähligen Touren, verabschiedete sich Soffy O von dem Projekt in Richtung Schweden und reflektierte erst einmal genau, was alles passiert ist. In dieser Phase entstand auch ihr erstes Album „The Beauty Of It“, das von dem Kanadier Mocky produziert wurde und sich vom Electro abwandte.

Während die Schwedin zwischenzeitlich an ihrem dritten Solo-Werk arbeitet, eine Mixture aus „lazy 80s Pop and modern cheese“, sind sich die beiden Tok Toks hingegen immer treu geblieben: Techno forever. Das waren Benjamin Weiss aka Nerk und Fabian Feyerabendt schon davor und auch wieder nach dem Trubel: „Da fängst du nicht gleich an, am Rad zu drehen, nur weil wir mal einen Charterfolg hatten. Also wir werden auf jeden Fall schön auf dem Teppich bleiben und uns weiterhin locker machen“, meinten sie damals. Eine Single für Nena war trotzdem noch drin und fortan ging sie wieder ihrem Alltag nach. Polternde Live-Gigs standen wieder auf dem Programm und darke, rohe Veröffentlichungen auf ihren Labels Tok Tok und V-Records.

Nerk und Feyerabendt stammen aus der Berliner Hausbesetzer-Szene der frühen 90er. „Da gingen aber oft derbe und krasse Partys, auf denen wir dann aufgelegt und später live gespielt haben. Wir haben jede Party mitgenommen, scheiß egal, ob Geld oder nicht. Da haben wir uns dann auch unseren ersten Atari gekauft und einen Sampler, der stammte von einem Typen, der in so einer komischen christlichen Sekte war.“

Tok Tok waren schon immer liebenswerte Chaoten und wie das so ist, werden Chaoten öfters belohnt als zielgerichtete Streber. Während ihrer Zeit bei Bpitch Control lernte Feyerabendt Soffy O bei einem Blinddate in einem Berliner Club kennen, die sich als Sängerin outete und schwupps war „Missy Queen gonna die“ schon im Kasten und die Geschichte nahm ihren Lauf. Nun sind sie wieder vereint. Gut für sie und gut für die Romy.

Zum Frankfurter Label Connaisseur Recordings hat Benztown Artists von Beginn an einen guten Draht. Das liegt zum einen natürlich daran, dass Connaisseur Acts wie Patrick Chardronnet und Afrilounge quasi direkt um die Ecke wohnen, zum anderen natürlich weil uns die Musik so gut reinläuft, die Labelchef Alex Flitsch veröffentlicht und auch auflegt. Auch Flitsch das Romy Asessment Center im Juli 2008 erfolgreich durchlaufen, deswegen beehren uns die Connaisseur-Posse ab sofort regelmäßig.

2008 war ein aufregendes Jahr für Alex Flitsch. Im Sommer wurde die zweite Connaisseur Labelwerkschau „Grand Cru 2008“ veröffentlicht, in europaweiten Dance-Mags als Compilation des Monats geadelt wurde. Nach dem Sommer hob Flitsch dann noch bereits das zweite Side-Label „Outils de Connaisseur“ aus der Taufe, das sich housigen DJ-Tools widmet.

Alex Flitsch treibt seit 1994 sein Unwesen als DJ, gilt als wahrer Kenner und Liebhaber in der internationalen elektronischen Musikszene bekannt. Und so kann man sich heutzutage bei seinem Label und auch bei seinen DJ-Sets auf geschmackvolle, ausgewählte Klänge verlassen. Schließlich ist ein Connaisseur ein Genießer und kein Konsument - jemand mit einem guten Geschmack! Genau das ist der Grundgedanke der Connaisseur-Philosophie, die von der ersten Veröffentlichung verbreitet wurde und nach knapp über 25 Releases so tiefe Krater hinterlassen hat, wie Mountains high sind. Die magische Deepness von Connaisseur Releases versetzt Berge.

Zum Auftakt dieser neuen Reihe im Romy S. ist Patrick Chardronnet mit im Boot. Seine ersten Sporen verdiente er sich bereits schon in den frühen 90er als Vertoner von Werbespots. Nach und nach kam er mit Clubmusik in Berührung. „Mit den technischen Vorkenntnissen war es nicht so sehr schwer meinen ersten Clubtrack zu machen“, meint er heute und produzierte fortan eigene Stücke und Remixe, aber auch Afrilounge nutzten seinen Golden Touch.

Eines Tages lockte Chardronnet die göttliche Emo-Techno-Nummer „Eve By Day“ aus seinen Maschinen, Alex Flitsch nahm das Schicksal in die Hand, startete damit sein Label Connaisseur und seitdem ist Chardronnet am Wochenende eher selten in seinem kleinen schönen Haus im Schwarzwald anzutreffen. Und schon gleich zweimal nicht am heutigen Abend!

From modest beginnings in the gloriously grotty surroundings of Camden’s Barfly, Kill ‘Em All has grown into one of London’s clubbing monoliths. Kill ‘Em All is one of the few clubnights that has been consistently successful in combining the ebullience of live bands and the pulse of dance music. This success has taken them from Camden to fabric, and after three years of one room takeovers in Farringdon, they’ve now taken the house. Three rooms that represent the spirit and diversity of the Kill ‘Em All ethos, it’s a mouth watering lineup that is distinctly Gallic in flavour. Kill ‘Em All resident DJ slash promoters Filthy Dukes have a singular vision; to bring together filthy DJs and filthy tunes, and to the delight of several thousand revelers, turn fabric into a musical den of iniquity. In a good way.

The Filthy Dukes’ have been holed up in the studio working on their eagerly anticipated debut album. With the album almost ready to drop, the boys spent much of the second half of 2008 whetting appetites for it with the first single from the album, ‘Tupac Robot Club Rock’, which was a lethal festival and dancefloor rocker. Joining the Dukes in the main room are Joakim and The Disco, French electronic pioneer Joakim’s live show. Joakim recently released his latest album on Tigersushi Records, the simply (but aptly) named ‘My Best Remixes.’ On the night, Joakim and the rest of his four piece will be performing their explosive and energetic live show; pure electro punk brilliance. Also live will be Padded Cell - Richard Sen and Neil Higgins’ live project, bringing some of their unique dark disco to the main room.

Room One will also play host to DJ sets from two of the most buzzy selectors around right now, Brodinski and Stopmakingme!. Brodinski, another sparkling French gem, has been causing mayhem over the last couple of years on dancefloors the world over with his riotous DJ sets. Brodinski is now also developing a glowing reputation as a precociously talented producer and remixer following his recent ‘Oblivion EP’ on Turbo, and having given the re-rub treatment to tracks by the likes of Das Pop, DJ Mehdi and MixHell, so expect a set filled with bass heavy dancefloor bangers and plenty of personal re-tweaks. Stopmakingme! meanwhile will be doing his thing; blending everything from spaced-out disco sounds to bleepy techno via tough electronic beats aplenty.

Meanwhile, in Room Two Yuksek, Brodinski’s cohort and regular collaborator, and another of electronic music’s French frontrunners, will be performing live. After several years of remixing the likes of Das Pop, Ghostface Killah, Plugs and Primary 1, 2009 is going to be the year this Parisian well and truly blows up, so check him now while you still can. Sweden’s Tommy Sparks will also be live, one of the current music scene’s finest pop purveyors, his music occupies that area where an electronic background, top songwriting skills and pop sensibilities all meet; it’s super-exuberant, super-catchy genius. We Have Band, an insanely good name, will be live as well – having recently released their debut single ‘Oh!’ on Kitsune, and been touring incessantly, they’re set for huge things this year, so get a dose of their disco rock while it’s still fresh out the box.

Room Two also features the DJ talents of Riton, whose incredible 2008 Krautrock album Eine Kleine Nachtmusik has been busy filling end of year best of’s, is now working on a new Riton record, so this is a rare opportunity over the coming months to see him away from the studio, rocking a crowd. Lou & Nova, a duo consisting of Lou from New Young Pony Club and renowned designer Nova, will be spinning everything and anything from 80s bits and pieces, to disco, to R&B, to modern pop, dancehall and beyond. Completing the second room cast is Matt Walsh, an initiated member of Tiga’s Turbo family. Matt’s been making plenty of noise lately with his Clouded Vision project, releasing incendiary remixes of Moby, Brodinski and even the legendary Lennie De Ice track ‘We R IE’.

Room Three will be getting seriously disco funkular with the Golden Bug. This Parisian has been getting mega love from the likes of Erol Alkan and Prins Thomas, who have been struggling to resist his combination of Digitalism-esque energy and 70s-era disco breaks – it’s a winning formula, and well worth checking. Bournemouth’s disco king Toshiki Ohta will also be playing, whilst disco from across the ages, plus much more besides comes from Acid Ted. Durrr resident Rory Phillips completes the lineup with a mix of previously unearthed beauties, soon-to-be-classics and one-off re-edits.

Endlich haben wir mal eine schöne Aufgabe für unseren Chef! Der grummelt nämlich seit fast einem Jahr ziemlich in seinen Bart, dass er samstags nicht mehr Van Halen spielen darf, sondern jetzt immer diese Bummbummbumm-Musik in seinem Laden läuft, mit der er sich mittlerweile aber doch ganz gut arrangiert hat. Klar, wenns läuft, freut sich auch der Chef. Also wundert euch nicht, wenn heute ein kleiner Mann mit langen Zöpfen im roten Kittel vor dem Eingang steht und wie ein Honigkuchenpferd strahlt – denn ist Nikolausi!

Zu diesem Anlass war uns nur die beste Schweizer Schoki gerade gut genug. Raphael Ripperton gilt als Chamäleon in der Schweizer Musikszene. Bevor er mit dem Projekt Lazy Fat People auf James Holdens Label Border Community landete und damit seinen Durchbruch schaffte, hatte er schon so allerhand verschiedene elektronische Band-Projekte vorangetrieben.

Mit Lazy Fat People folgten Nummern auf Mathew Jonson’s Wagon Repair und Carl Craigs Planet E, womit man wohl die drei wichtigsten Eckpunkte des Universums elektronischer Musik abgesteckt haben dürfte. Die Lazy Fat People gingen nach einiger Zeit getrennte Wege, was für Ripperton, der schon während das Projekt noch am Laufen war, einen massiven Solo-Output an den Tag legte, keine Verzögerung bedeutete.

Einige großartige, mit der Zeit immer deeper greifenden House-Nummern auf Systematic, Liebe*Detail (man möge sich nur die Liebe*Detail Spezial #6 zu Gemüte führen - sein Remix von Sven Weisemann ist der helle Wahnsinn) und Connaisseur ließen schließlich keine Fragen offen. Ripperton hat seinen Style endgültig gefunden.

Hinzu kommt der Umstand, dass Rippertons Label Perspectiv Recordings noch während diese Buchstaben getippt werden wie Unkraut wächst und gedeiht und einen nicht unerheblichen Anteil daran hat, dass die Ecke Genf/Lausanne zu den fruchtbarsten Böden des elektronischen Europa gehört, wovon man sich diesen Abend live & direct im Romy S. überzeugen kann. Mit dabei die Stuttgarter Felsen in der Brandung namens Roody und Eric Walker und natürlich der Nikolaus.

The legendary Wall Of Sound label is now coming up to their 15th year of challenging and pushing the music industry, continually releasing artists that raise the bar that little bit higher. To celebrate the end of a great year on 12 December, they’ve hustled together one of their most epic lineups yet – indeed, Wall of Sound are the ringleaders of The Circus of The Mad...

WOS will be unleashing the ferocious mixed beast Mongrel, a wild DIY collective that go against the grain, and the most punk swagger to hit the pop world in a long while. Mongrel is comprised of John McClure (vocals) and Joe Moskow (keyboards) from Sheffield’s Reverend and The Makers, lyrically exceptional UK hip hop artist Lowkey, Andy Nicholson (formerly of Arctic Monkeys) on bass, Drew McConnell (guitar) from Babyshambles and archetypal producer Jagz Kooner. With an album on the rise, and a 4 track EP out earlier in the month (which includes the growling ‘The Menace’ single), this marks one of Mongrel’s first official gigs…not to be missed. Meanwhile, the stage will light with the sounds of Mpho (meaning ‘gift’ in Zulu) Skeef, one of the most beautiful and eclectic – not to mention recognisable - voices around, who’s equipped with an impeccable style that wraps perfectly around the shape of any beat. Her work with Bugz In The Attic, Anthony Tidd and Morgan Zarate is only the tip of the iceberg , and a live set from such an immense spirit will shake Room One to the rafters.

On 12 December, every punter will receive a very special treat from rule-breaking, genre-bending Belgian duo The Glimmers - a copy of their new ‘The Glimmers Are Gee Gee Fazzi' album. The concept is best explained by The Glimmers themselves:
“We are on the road, every weekend, from city to city, from country to country, and we see a lot of people who like what we're doing. Those people could be interested in hearing a little more from us, and so we thought about a way of getting the music to them directly. We decided to make good old fashioned CD's and press them ourselves, with our music on there. Then we figured out a way of getting those CD's straight to the clubbers. In collaboration with the promoters and the venues where we have performed over the last few years, we have made it possible to distribute our discs for free towards everybody who joins our party. 'The Glimmers Are Gee Gee Fazzi' is a collection of tracks we made with a.o. Lindstrom, Prins Thomas, Princess Superstar, Freeform Five, Ray Mang, In Flagranti, CJ Bolland...Some of those tracks are in their original version, others had a life before and have been re- recorded especially for 'Gee Gee Fazzi’, and some of the tracks contain additional production by other artists.”

It’s not often you can leave a disco with the memories of the night encapsulated on disc, especially one that’s not available elsewhere (the CD will never be sold in shops, only at The Glimmers’ shows). We salute The Glimmers in the fight against conventionality…

And up in Room Three, Wall of Sound opens a treasure chest filled with their diamond-coated roster – including the frenetic rockers The Infadels jumping on the wheels of steels, Nottingham’s rowdy rambunctious Riotous Rockers revving up the room (how’s that for alliteration?) and a rare DJ set from the remix-savvy Ocelot, possibly the biggest and baddest wildcats to ever come out of Texas.

Over in Room Two, the Kill ‘Em All vagabonds will be bringing their own brand of hedonism, with a line-up that simply reeks of quality; from the big-hitters to some of the scene’s freshest names. Heading things up are Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard and Al Doyle, who really need no introduction; their ever-exhilarating DJ sets have been known to range from glitchy hip hop to thumping techno to the bounce of UK garage. There will be an explosive live performance from the incredible Esser, who has just finished touring with Kaiser Chiefs, the poor thing, and Plugs, the side project of Does It Offend You Yeah’s Morgan, whose ‘Imaginary Friend’ EP has been causing something of a stir. Shit Robot, who used to run New York parties of the same name with James Murphy some years back and has been releasing some cracking music on the mighty DFA in recent years, will also be joining in the fun. Completing the line-up will be Kill ‘Em All regulars Stopmakingme! (still the best name ever) and residents-slash-promoters-slash-geniuses the Filthy Dukes who will be setting the tone for the night with their effervescent brand of synthy, spiky, electro-pop.

Dass sie derzeit zu den großen integrativen Kräften in der Berliner Musikszene zählen, stellten WARREN SUICIDE eindrucksvoll Anfang des Jahres unter Beweis, als Nackt, der Mastermind der Gruppe, gemeinsam mit dem Rapper Yaneq sowohl etablierte als auch weniger bekannte Lokalmatadoren zum Neujahrskonzert in die Volksbühne luden und begleitet von ausgetüftelten Streicherarrangements einen opulenten Liederabend auf die Beine stellten. Wenige Wochen nach dem leider viel zu späten Kurzauftritt bei »Fuck You – Berlin Insane« kehren Nackt und die bezaubernde Sängerin Cherie zurück, um ihre  ebenso mitreißenden wie kunstvoll auskomponierten Electro-Rock-Hymnen zu zelebrieren und so die Bühne für einen der langlebigsten und verdientesten Stars der hiesigen Musikwelt zu bereiten. Mit einem ihrer gefürchteten Live- Auftritte begehen T. RAUMSCHMIERE  & BAND die Veröffentlichung ihre neuen Albums »I Tank U«, auf dem Bandleader Marco Haas, unterstützt durch illustre Gäste wie Deichkind, Tim Vanhamel, Puppetmastaz, Lilian Hak oder Barbara Panther, dunkle Elektronica, Punkrock, Songwriting und Sägezahn-Techno zu Partymusik mit der Wirkungsmacht von KO-Tropfen zusammenbraut. die Vokalisten Gene Serene, Barbara Panther und Lilian Hak werden Marco Haas aka T.Raumschmiere bei seinem Bandauftritt am 5.12. in der Volksbühne begleiten.

Bryzant Games Album Release Tour

Steter Tropfen höhlt den Stein. So lässt sich am besten Christian Fischers Karriereverlauf beschreiben. Nach langjähriger Basisarbeit erntet er nun in den letzten anderthalb Jahren die Früchte seiner Saat. Mit der „Clubtech Panorama“-Mixcompilation wurden erstmals viele auf den gebürtigen Leipziger aufmerksam, gefolgt von dem ersten Album der Deckmonsters, sein Projekt mit dem brasilianischen Superstar DJ Murphy, mit dem er im Anschluss durch die größten europäischen Musikfestivals tourte, um die Zuschauer mit ihren atemberaubenden Turntabletricks zu faszinieren.

Da fragt man sich, wie Christian Fischer da immer noch Zeit hatte, um sein Debütalbum fertig zu stellen, das im Oktober auf seinem eigenen Label Definition Records erschienen ist. Und es auch nicht so, dass unter der Hektik Qualitätseinbußen zu vernehmen sind, ganz im Gegenteil. "Bryzant Games" ist ein faszinierendes Danceepic, das das pumpende Herz einen Sprung machen lässt oder zwei. Vor allem: Christian Fischer zeigt hierauf, dass er ein Mann mit vielen Facetten ist, wie auch hinter den Decks, die er seit 1996 unermüdlich beackert, erst an lokalen Leipziger Partyfront, dann national und schließlich in aller Welt – von Lateinamerika bis nach Skandinavien oder Asien.

Ob man nun Techno, Electro oder Minimal vorzieht, dessen Spektrum von kraftvollem Floorflutter bis zu melodischen Meltdowns reicht, spielt keine Rolle: „Bryzant Games“ hat von allem etwas. Die vielfarbigen Hemisphären der elektronischen Dancemusik ausleuchtend, vollbringt Christian Fischer, das magische Kunststück, stilistischen Konventionen und Stereotypisierungen ein Schnippchen zu schlagen, um bedingungslose Musikalität zuzulassen.

Aber nicht nur das: Der ostdeutsche Labelbetreiber/Produzent/DJ geht eklektischten Kooperationen ein, zum Beispiel mit der deutschen Hip-Hop-Sängerin Sabrina Setlur (!) oder den UK-Techno- und Breaks-Heroen Slam und Hybrid und auch das hat Hand und Fuß – ein Multitalent dieser Fischer.

Das zeigt sich auch immer wieder bei seinen Sets, bei denen Christian Fischer gerne das Plakative vermeidet aber dabei doch unglaublich eingängig klingt. Bereits im Hochsommer wurde er eher spontan an einem Freitag ins Romy S. eingeladen und überzeugte auch bei uns auf ganzer Linie. Zwischen einer Asien- und einer Brasilien-Tour hat er jetzt ein Follow-Up Date für uns gefunden.

Musikalisch dürfte Fischer mit Marius Lehnert perfekt harmonieren, denn auch der greift bei seinen Gigs in den angesagten lokalen wie regionalen Technobuden lieber mal mutig in die Plattenkiste, als immer nur auf Nummer sicher zu gehen – was die schöne Romy sehr mag. Denn Frauen wollen bekanntlich ungern gelangweilt werden.

Da das Feedback auf diese Veranstaltung seit Wochen ungebrochen riesig ist, haben wir uns entschlossen einen Vorverkauf anzubieten, den wir dringend empfehlen wollen.

Techno-Star Paul Kalkbrenner spielt in dem hochgelobten Film "Berlin Calling" die Hauptrolle des DJ Ickarus und kommt samt Film im Gepäck dieses Samstag nach Stuttgart.

Ein besseres Samstagabendprogramm gibt es nicht: Zuerst bei Bier und Nachos und in Anwesenheit von Paul Kalkbrenner den Film im Delphi anschauen, danach im Romy S. bei Paules Live-Set durchdrehen.

Mittlerweile weiß es jedes (Techno-)Kind. Seit Anfang Oktober läuft im Kino ein Film, da spielt einer von uns mit. Einen den man jede Woche hautnah erleben kann, einer der ist wie wir und bis zum Umfallen feiert und uns dabei noch mit sauguter Mugge beschenkt. Und er spielt sich ein wenig sich selbst, wie man in den letzten Wochen oft lesen konnte, bloß der Drehbuchautor hat ihm den leicht dämlichen Namen DJ Ickarus verpasst. Aber da er einer von uns ist, sagen wir weiterhin einfach Paule, Kalki oder Brenni zu ihm. Nein, letzteres eher doch nicht, aber vielleicht: Paul Kalkbrenner. Junge, komm bald wieder nach Haus´!  
 
Paul Kalkbrenner in dieser Nacht läuft über den roten Teppich auf den Romy S. Stufen ein und hat bringt eine Kopie des Films mit, der zuvor im Delphi Arthaus Kino gezeigt wird. „Der Berliner Elektro-Komponist Martin (Paul Kalkbrenner), genannt DJ Ickarus, tourt mit seiner Managerin und Freundin Mathilde (Rita Lengyel) durch die Tanzclubs der Welt. Sie stehen kurz vor ihrer größten Albumveröffentlichung. Als Ickarus jedoch nach einem Auftritt im Drogenrausch in eine Berliner Nervenklinik eingeliefert wird, geraten alle Pläne durcheinander. Eine Tragikomödie im Berlin von heute.“ Soweit die Pressemappe.

Im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Musikerporträts, die sonst meist über alte oder tote amerikanische oder englische Künstler handeln, hat Regisseur Hannes Stöhr bewusst die deutsche elektronische Szene als Biotop für seinen Movie gewählt. "Die Musiker der Youtube Generation komponieren auf ihren Laptops, fliegen um die ganze Welt und benötigen keine Texte. Sie verkaufen ihre Tracks über Downloads, sind auf diese Weise unabhängig von großen Majors und sie sind im besten Sinne Dienstleister für die Tanzbegeisterten der internationalen, globalisierten Clublandschaft." Mit Paul Kalkbrenner hat Stöhr den perfekten Protagonisten für die Hauptrolle ausgewählt, der zudem auch noch ein großes schauspielerisches Talent offenbarte.

Der Film zeichnet selbstverständlich ein erfundene Biographie, denn freilich musste der lebensfrohe Paule sein geliebtes Friedrichshain noch nie verlassen, um in der Klappsmühle eines seiner zahlreichen Alben auf Bpitch Control fertig zu produzieren (wie im Film), aber trotzdem hat er mit Ickarus doch einiges gemeinsam, vor allem eben der rastlose Lebensstil zwischen Globetrotting und Studioarbeit.
 
Diesen Lifestyle führt Kalkbrenner bald seit 10 Jahren. Neben Chefin Ellen Allien und Acts wie Modeselektor, Sascha Funke oder Smash TV entwickelte sich Paul Kalkbrenner mit mehreren Maxis und Alben zu einem der Zugpferde des Berliner Bpitch-Imperiums schlechthin. Der Friedrichshainer for live wurde aufgrund seines epischen, flächigen und mitreißenden Stils schnell in die Neo-Trance Ecke gedrückt, was ihm aber eigentlich gar nicht so recht ist. Energetischer und melodiöser Techno trifft es wohl eher. Seine Live-Acts sind furios und rocken die Bude bis in den letzten Winkel. Watch youtube-Videos.
