Shunami>>> 27, is the producer/rapper who belongs to the one of the dopest crew in Osaka Underground, Large Prophits. I only use for AKAI MPC 2000 for my beats so this is my profession. Cuemix>>> What do you do besides producing? Shunami>>> I basically work as a producer, and sometime rap when I feel it like rapping and do some chorus for the hooks. Cuemix>>> Do you have a own studio ? Shunami>>> Yes, I do have my own home-studio. Cuemix>>> Where do you meet the artists you work with? Shunami>>> We usually meet at co-producer WSD’s output sound studio. Cuemix>>> How does it come to the collaboration with the American MC’s (Alliance)? Shunami>>> I used to live in California U.S.A for 7 years from ‘95 to ‘02. I went to study English first and then photography at College, but the most important thing that I captured was HIP HOP MUSIC. I met a lot of people in 7 years both true MCs and true friends. I collaborated with those good friends/talented artist while living in California. Cuemix>>> Besides Large Prophits are there other Artists you produce in Japan? Shunami>>> Yes, I am currently working with Arata who belongs to one of worldwide underground pioneer, the Living Legends. Cuemix>>> And what can you tell me about them and their music? Shunami>>> Sure, Arata is the one and only. I mean there are many underground MCs in Japan, but nobody can be Arata. He is the original. He is now working on his new album which should be coming out around 2004 Summer/Fall. Cuemix>>> Any plans about distribution or touring in Europe? Shunami>>> Yes, I got a distribution in Paris, France. They got my own album “Alliance”, and Large Prophits’ EP “The Lyrics” and brand new single “Turn It Up”. Shunami>>> There are originally 6 members in Large Prophits: K-ONE(MC), AGRI-8(MC/Producer), TOKI(MC), MICRO(MC), SHUNAMI(Producer/MC) and DJ-R(DJ). Cuemix>>> What means the Name Large Prophits? Shunami>>> Large Prophits has double meanings. 1) Large Profit: we don’t make rap for money but we wanna make money off rap. 2) Large Prophets: we are the messenger through the lyrics. We deliver the message to the next generation. Cuemix>>> When do you started doing Hip Hop? Shunami>>> Since 1995. Cuemix>>> What about the Hip Hop Scene in Japan, how large is it? Shunami>>> I would say the Japan got 3rd largest hip hop scene in the world. Cuemix>>> Are there special towns where the scene is larger (stronger) than it other towns? Shunami>>> Tokyo is the capital city in Japan, you can find everything there. They got the biggest hip hop scene in Japan, many artist go there to perform. Cuemix>>> Do you live from doing Hip Hop or any Jobs besides that? Shunami>>> I wish I could only work as a producer, but life is not that easy. I got a day job 8 am to 5 pm 5 days in a week working in my father’s company, the fishing takcle manufacture. We do export to europe especially France, Spain and some to Germany, too. That’s why if I am going to Europe. I wanna check on that market, too, you know? Cuemix>>> I know that Hip Hop has a tradition in Japan, but it never came to the point that hiphop is mainstream in Japan. Do you find it useful for the development of hip hop music that it is more underground ? There are wack mainstream Hip Hop, no Hip Pop artist in Japan nowadays. They act and rap like B-boys but they don’t know anything about Hip-Hop. In Germany many young people look like B boys but you’ll never know if they are listening under their headphones to Britney Spears, what about that in Japan? Shunami>>> Same things happening in Japan, too.“You Never Know” Cuemix>>> (Funny Question) Would you agree Hip Hop must be from Japan, because in Kobe they still built the Technics SL 1200? Shunami>>> (Funny Answer) I know that Techincs SL 1200 was made in Japan, but I didn’t know that it is made in Kobe. Cuemix>>> But can you name me the Hardware you use in the studio and the hardware you need for playing live? Shunami>>> I only use AkAI MPC 2000 for beatmaking and only use Yamaha AW416 for recording. In terms of playing live, we usally use Pioneer CDJ and 2 Techincs SL 1200. Cuemix>>> What about your lyrics? Whats the message? Shunami>>> We usually put the day to day life message such as things happening around us.Nothing like bling-bling or killing like that. We focus on positive vibes in our messages. Cuemix>>> Who writes the lyrics? Shunami>>> On our own. Whoever raps, each writes for one’s lyrics. Cuemix>>> First the lyrics than the beats or do you make your songs by jamming around? Shunami>>> We usually make beats first and have them listen to it and pick up the topic and then start writing. Cuemix>>> How large are the club in witch you are doing your shows? Shunami>>> It depends on. But we usually perform clubs where 500 people max. Cuemix>>> Is Hip Hop accepted by the people in Japan? Or are you more like Underdogs ? Shunami>>> I would say, YES. It used to be more like Underdogs, but now it is more accepted than last few years. Cuemix>>> What about censorship in Japan ? Can you sing/talk what you want? Shunami>>> I think censorship is not that strict until 2000 CD sales. Cuemix>>> Your personal opinion about the war in Iraq? Shunami>>> Stop the War!! Cuemix>>> What are your next plans, maybe someday a tour in Europe? Erst habe ich Englisch studiert und dann Fotografie am College, aber wirklich wichtig war nur Hip-Hop-Musik. Ich habe in sieben Jahren viele Menschen getroffen, sowohl echte MCs wie auch wahre Freunde. Mit diesen Freunden und talentierten Künstlern arbeitete ich in Kalifornien zusammen. Cuemix>>> Produziert du außer Large Prophits noch andere Künstler in Japan? Shunami>>> Ja, im Moment arbeite ich mit Arata, der zu den weltweiten Underground Pionieren, den Living Legends gehört. Wir bringen die Botschaft für die nächste Generation. Cuemix>>> Seit wann macht ihr Hip Hop? Shunami>>> Seit 1995. Cuemix>>> Wie sieht die japanische Hip-Hop-Szene aus? Wie groß ist sie? Shunami>>> Ich würde sagen, dass Japan die drittgrößte Hip-Hop-Szene der Welt hat. Cuemix>>> Gibt es Städte, in denen sich die Szene stärker konzentriert? Shunami>>> Tokyo ist die Hauptstadt von Japan, du findest alles dort. Die Hip-Hop-Szene ist dort sehr groß, viele Künstler performen in Tokyo. Cuemix>>> Lebst du vom Hip-Hop? Oder hast du noch andere Jobs? Shunami>>> Ich wünschte, ich könnte als Producer arbeiten, aber das Leben ist nicht so einfach. Ich habe einen Job von acht Uhr morgens bis fünf Uhr nachmittags, fünf Tage die Woche in der Firma meines Vaters, dort wird Angelzubehör hergestellt. Wir exportieren in Europa vor allem nach Frankreich, Spanien und auch nach Deutschland. Auch deshalb möchte ich nach Europa, um den Markt auszukundschaften. Cuemix>>> Ich weiß, dass es eine Hip-Hop-Tradition in Japan gibt, aber Hip-Hop wurde nie Mainstream. Findest du es hilfreich für die Entwicklung des Hip-Hop, dass es eher eine Untergrundbewegung ist? Shunami>>> Es gibt sehr schlechten Mainstream-Hip-Hop in Japan, keine Hip-Hop-Künstler. Sie benehmen sich und rappen wie B-Boys, aber sie wissen gar nichts über Hip-Hop. Cuemix>>> In Deutschland sehen viele junge Leute aus wie B-Boys, aber man weiß nie, ob sie über ihre Kopfhörer nicht Britney Spears hören. Wie ist das in Japan? Shunami>>> Das gibt es auch in Japan. Man weiß es nicht... Cuemix>>> (Funny Question) Würdest du der Aussage zustimmen, dass Hip-Hop ursprünglich aus Japan kommt? In Kobe wird immer noch der Technics SL 1200 hergestellt... Shunami>>>(Funny Answer) Ich weiß, dass der Technics SL 1200 in Japan produziert wird, aber ich wusste nicht, dass er aus Kobe kommt. Cuemix>>> Kannst du mir die Hardware nennen, die du im Studio brauchst und welche du live verwendest? Shunami>>> Ich benutze nur AKAI MPC 2000 für die Beats und Yamaha AW416 für die Aufnahme. Live nehmen wir normalerweise Pioneer CDJ und zwei Technics SL 1200. Cuemix>>> Was ist die Botschaft in deinen Lyrics? Shunami>>> Es ist eine ganz alltägliche Botschaft über die Dinge, die um uns herum passieren. Kein Bling-Bling, nichts über das Töten oder so. Wir konzentrieren uns auf positive Vibes. Cuemix>>> Wer schreibt die Texte? Shunami>>> Wir selbst. Wer auch immer rappt, schreibt seine eigenen Texte. Cuemix>>> Zuerst die Lyrics, dann die Beats, oder entwickelt ihr eure Songs beim Jamming? Shunami>>> Normalerweise machen wir zuerst die Beats, dann hören wir uns das an, greifen ein Thema auf und fangen an zu schreiben. Cuemix>>> Wie groß sind die Clubs, in denen ihr auftretet? Shunami>>> Das kommt drauf an, normalerweise performen wir vor maximal 500 Leuten. Cuemix>>> Wird Hip Hop in Japan akzeptiert? Oder seid ihr die Underdogs? Shunami>>> Ich würde sagen, Ja! Früher waren wir Underdogs, aber in den letzten Jahren wurden wir mehr und mehr anerkannt. Cuemix>>> Wie steht es mit Zensur in Japan? Könnt ihr sagen/singen, was ihr wollt?
